53 Mr. Bradford asked the Taoiseach if he will ensure that unemployed people will be given priority in the filling of vacancies for census enumerators. [18863/95]
The closing date for receipt of application forms for the position of census enumerator was 12 December 1995. Application forms were issued and returned through FÁS. In addition to advertisements in the media, posters advertising the vacancies were displayed in FÁS and Department of Social Welfare offices countywide to encourage suitable persons on the live register to apply. Appointment will be offered by the Central Statistics Office on the basis of open competitive interviews with preference being given to suitable persons not in paid employment. This arrangement, which also applied for the 1991 Census, was agreed with the Employment Equality Agency as a method of targeting the unemployed without infringing equality legislation.
