The criteria used on such occasions is aimed at including as guests representatives from as large a cross-section of Irish society as possible. As host, I endeavour to make the invitation list on such occasions as comprehensive as possible. On this particular occasion, because of the large US delegation and notwithstanding the use for the first time of the balcony areas in St. Patrick's Hall, the representation on the Irish side had to be severely restricted.
