Vol. 460 No. 5

Written Answers. - Insurance Industry Report.

Helen Keogh

Ceist:

9 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment his views on the recommendations of the joint working group of the Irish Insurance Federation and his Department; whether he intends to implement these recommendations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1567/96]

I am currently considering the report of the Department of Enterprise and Employment/ Irish Insurance Federation joint working group on the growth and development of the insurance industry. The objective of the exercise was to undertake an appraisal of the insurance indus-try's strategic position, as a key sector of the economy, in the context of the challenges and opportunities created by the advent of the European Single Market and the general international movement towards greater liberalisation of trade in services. A number of the working group's recommendations are directed at the industry itself. Other recommendations replicate proposals made by the industry to Government in a budgetary context and the remaining recommendations deal with my Department's involvement with the industry in developing a more efficient and effective regulatory regime. The implementation of the latter recommendations will make a constructive input to my Department's current review of the Insurance Acts and the preparation of new regulations on disclosure aimed at achieving greater transparency, from the customers' perspective, in the marketing of insurance products.
