Vol. 460 No. 5

Written Answers. - Long-Term Unemployment.

Liz O'Donnell

Ceist:

12 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the official statistics his Department uses to measure long-term unemployment in the economy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1572/96]

The main statistical measures used by my Department in relation to long-term unemployment (that is persons who are unemployed for one year or more) are the annual labour force survey and the live register halfyearly age by duration analysis both of which are published by the CSO.

The latest labour force survey figure for long-term unemployment available to my Department, for April 1994, was 127,400. The corresponding live register figure was 135,300.
