Vol. 463 No. 3

Written Answers. - Public Sector Employment.

Helen Keogh

Ceist:

34 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the ratio for men to women appointed to senior positions in the public sector for each of the years since his Department was established. [6411/96]

I have decided to undertake a comprehensive survey of the relevant public sector employments. This will update the position outlined in my Department's 1993 report on a survey of equal opportunities in the public sector.

According to the Department of Finance which reviews equal opportunities developments in the Civil Service on an annual basis, the proportion of men to women appointed to senior positions in the Civil Service has been increasing in recent years. In 1993 the numbers appointed to senior positions in administrative, technical and professional grades comprised 11 per cent women and 89 per cent men. In 1995 this had risen to 16 per cent women. While much remains to be done within the Civil Service the systematic annual review of such appointments is ensuring a continued focus on women's under-representation at this level.
