Vol. 464 No. 3

Written Answers. - Continued Participation in Labour Market.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

122 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the plans, if any, he has to introduce appropriate measures on behalf of older workers and the older long-term unemployed to encourage their continued participation in the labour market and which will eliminate certain practices such as the specification of age limits in recruitment advertisements and the targeting of voluntary redundancy schemes at the older worker. [8161/96]

The following measures were announced in the recent budget which are designed to encourage the continued participation by older workers and the long-term unemployed in the labour market: the splitting of community employment into two distinct options, (a) a part time integration option and (b) a part time job option; introduction of a new pilot whole time job option and introduction of a new recruitment subsidy scheme called "Jobstart".

With regard to the introduction of measures that would outlaw the specification of age limits in recruitment advertisements and the targeting of voluntary redundancy schemes at the older worker, these are matters which would be more appropriate for consideration by the Minister for Equaliy and Law Reform.
