Vol. 465 No. 2

Written Answers. - Prisoner Transfer.

Éamon Ó Cuív

Ceist:

124 Éamon Ó Cuív asked the Minister for Justice when the transfer of a prisoner (details supplied) will take place; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9375/96]

Under the provisions of the Transfer of Sentenced Persons Act, 1995, an application must be made to the High Court for the necessary warrant authorising the taking of the person referred to in the question into custody here and his continued detention. This necessitates that all the relevant documentation is validated, correct and in order for the transfer to proceed. My Department is in close contact with the Chief State Solicitor's Office concerning this particular application and have been advised that additional information and clarification of information already received from the United Kingdom authorities will be required before the application can be made to the High Court. This information is being compiled by the Chief State Solicitor's Office.

I would also like to assure the Deputy that this matter is receiving full attention and that once the necessary information and clarification have been received from the United Kingdom authorities there will be no undue delay in making the application to the High Court.
