Vol. 467 No. 4

Written Answers. - Clearance Checking Procedures.

Ben Briscoe

Ceist:

269 Mr. Briscoe asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment when his Department and the Department of Justice will bring to finality the discussions they are having concerning the implementation of clearance checking procedures for use by FÁS and by project sponsors, as outlined in his written reply to Parliamentary Question No. 187 of 8 May 1996; when he expects to have these procedures in operation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13192/96]

Representatives from my Department, FÁS, the Department of Justice and the Garda Síochána have recently held a meeting to discuss in detail possible measures to help prevent any incidences of child abuse involving participants on its programmes.

I understand that all concerned gained a fuller understanding of the issues from each other's perspectives. FÁS is, as a result, in the process of gathering additional information which will be made available to the Garda as soon as it can be collated.

Let me assure the Deputy that FÁS is treating this matter with the greatest urgency and will continue to co-operate fully with all interested parties with a view to ensuring that appropriate measures can be put in place at the earliest possible date.
