Vol. 471 No. 1

Written Answers. - Ombudsman for the Credit Institutions.

Mary Harney

Ceist:

210 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if he has satisfied himself with the arrangements which apply in relation to the remuneration of the Ombudsman for the Credit Institutions and his staff; if he has satisfied himself with the regulation of his functions; and his views on the independence of his office. [20370/96]

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 41 on 22 October 1996 when I indicated that, inter alia, the Ombudsman for the Credit Institutions has no statutory functions, and the finance for his activities, which would include his remuneration and that of his staff, is provided by the participating licensed banks, Trustee Savings Bank, building societies, ACC Bank and ICC Bank.

The other matters raised in the Deputy's question are proper to the Council for the Credit Institutions, which appoints the ombudsman and ensures his independence.
