120 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for Justice the progress, if any, made by the inter-departmental committee examining the position of non-nationals; the legislative proposals, if any, she will make on foot of the committee's conclusions. [9230/97]
The committee in question presented an interim report on applications for refugee status which subsequently formed the basis for the Refugee Act 1996. In addition, the committee initiated a review of the reception conditions for asylum seekers which led to the establishment of guidelines for better co-ordination between the various agencies involved in that area. Examination of the remaining issues covered by the committee's terms of reference is not completed. It is not possible, therefore, to indicate what legislative proposals, if any, might be made pending completion of that examination and following appropriate consideration of any possible recommendations.
