Vol. 480 No. 2

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

225 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment whether an urban council has the right to remove a person's name from the housing waiting list for a period of three years when the person turned down a house in an area he specifically asked not to be housed in. [13563/97]

Local authorities are required to let houses in accordance with a scheme of letting priorities made under section 11 of the Housing Act, 1988. Subject to compliance with section 11, it is a matter for each housing authority to determine the detailed criteria to be included in their scheme of letting priorities and to operate the provisions of their scheme in the letting of houses in their area. Schemes normally contain provisions to enable a housing authority to afford a lower priority when applicants refuse reasonable offers of accommodation.
