Vol. 480 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

316 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education if he will have arrangements made to reconsider an application for an extension of school transport for a person (details supplied) in County Mayo based on medical grounds. [13798/97]

In accordance with the terms of the school transport scheme, my Department may only consider special transport arrangements on medical grounds where pupils are severely medically handicapped, and their condition is such that it would prevent them from making their own way to school or to the pick-up point.

Medical evidence in respect of the pupil concerned was forwarded to the medical adviser in April 1997. On the basis of this evidence, the chief medical adviser determined that the appropriate medical conditions to provide a home pick-up do not apply in this case.

Accordingly, it is regretted that it would not be open to my Department to extend the service on medical grounds, as requested.
