Vol. 480 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

317 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education the situation in relation to Stanhope Street national school, Dublin 7, which has been threatened with losing a teaching post; if he will review the matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13466/97]

The staffing of a national school for a particular year is determined by the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous year.

The enrolment of Stanhope Street national school on 30 September 1996 was 442 pupils. This enrolment warrants a staffing of a principal and fourteen assistant teachers for the 1997-8 school year. This represents a reduction of two posts compared with the staffing levels at the school for the 1996-7 school year.

However, I am pleased to inform the Deputy that I have given provisional sanction for the retention of both posts to enable the school comply with maximum class size guidelines. The sanction will be reviewed in September next in the light of the enrolment actually achieved at the school.
