332 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Education if he will allow the retention of a teacher in a school (details supplied) in County Limerick based on the valid criteria; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13800/97]
The staffing of a national school for a particular year is determined by the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous year. The enrolment of the school in question on 30 September 1996 was 154 pupils which warrants a staffing of a principal and four assistant teachers for the 1997-98 school year. To retain its fifth assistant's post, the school in question needed to have achieved a minimum enrolment of 155 pupils on 30 September 1996. In the circumstances whereby this minimum enrolment was not achieved, the fifth assistant's post at the school will be suppressed at the end of the current school year. I should point out to the Deputy that the school will retain the services of a remedial teacher for the 1997-98 school year.

The enrolment of the school in question on 30 September 1996 was 176 pupils which warrants the staffing of a principal and five assistant teachers for the 1997-98 school year. To retain its sixth assistant's post, it was necessary for the school in question to have achieved a minimum enrolment of 186 pupils in September 1996. In the circumstances whereby this minimum enrolment was not achieved, the sixth assistant's post at the school will be suppressed at the end of the current school year. The school will retain the services of a remedial teacher for the 1997-98 school year.
