Vol. 483 No. 5

Written Answers. - Security on Hospital Campus.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

122 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health and Children whether he has reviewed the recent incident at St. Vincent's Hospital, Fairview, Dublin 3 which led to a work stoppage; and the action, if any, he has taken to provide the hospital with additional resources necessary to address the problem. [20900/97]

I am aware of the incident at the hospital earlier this year. The matter was reported promptly to the Inspector of Mental Hospitals and I understand that the incident is now a matter of investigation by the Garda.

I understand that following the incident, management and the unions representing the staff at the hospital have been involved in ongoing discussions regarding security at the hospital and that a number of measures have been undertaken or are about to be undertaken to improve security on the hospital campus. I have been assured by the management at the hospital that it is making every effort to resolve the security issues. A meeting between officials of my Department and the management of St. Vincent's Hospital to discuss security at the hospital has been scheduled for next week. I assure the Deputy that the provision of appropriate security measures at the hospital will not be compromised through lack of adequate resources.
