Ceist:

220 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if the town of Kells, County Meath, will be included in the new urban renewal scheme to be announced in 1998; if he has requested plans for this from the local authority; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3075/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 218, 219 and 220 together.

Cases for designation under the new urban renewal scheme, which is due to come into operation on 1 August 1998, will be considered on the basis of integrated area plans to be prepared by local authorities for areas of greatest priority in urban renewal terms. Guidelines have been issued which set out the criteria to be used by local authorities in the selection of such areas. Taking account of the terms of the guidelines, it is a matter for Meath County Council to decide on the preparation of integrated area plans for any of the towns referred to.
