Vol. 492 No. 6

Written Answers. - National Museum.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

15 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will have arrangements made to have the National Museum and the Natural History Museum open on Mondays, particularly in the tourist season; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14552/98]

The Deputy will be aware that the opening hours of the National Museum, and the Natural History Museum, Kildare Street, Dublin 2 are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday with the museum closed on Monday. These opening hours also apply in the case of the new National Museum facility at Collins Barracks.

The opening hours as they are at present were originally set having regard to the needs of tourists, schoolchildren as well as the general visitor and it is considered that they have been successful in meeting the particular needs of these groups.

Notwithstanding the above, however, I understand that the question of opening hours is under ongoing review by the National Museum, with a view to possible improvements in overall access by the public.
