Vol. 492 No. 6

Written Answers. - Inland Waterways.

Jan O'Sullivan

Ceist:

33 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the date, sum of money originally and currently allocated, timescale and state of work on the Abbey-Shannon navigation in Limerick as agreed with Limerick Corporation; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14536/98]

Following the decision not to proceed with the Boyne Navigation project and completion of the mid-term review of the EU operational programmes, the allocation for the Limerick navigation project is currently £1.35 million. The original allocation in 1994 was £1.1 million. The navigation project involves the construction of a weir, reinstatement of Sarsfield Lock and provision of moorings and is to be carried out in conjunction with the first phase of the Limerick main drainage scheme by Limerick Corporation. Tenders for the combined scheme have been received by the corporation and are under consideration as are issues relative to the lands affected by the project and the archaeological implications of the method of executing the works. A period of one year is envisaged for execution of the works.
