Ceist:

100 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the name and details of the person in County Mayo who was approved compensation under the 1997 weather related crop losses scheme. [14741/98]

Payment of assistance for crop losses was made to the person (details supplied) under the scheme of assistance for weather related crop losses (1997) in County Mayo.

Ceist:

101 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if the file details of the weather related crop losses scheme will be made available for inspection under the Freedom of Information Act, 1997. [14742/98]

The Freedom of Information Act, 1997, which came into effect on 21 March 1998 gave the public the right to access personal information relating to themselves. Applicants files under the scheme of assistance for weather related crop losses — 1997 — come within the remit of the Act.

Ceist:

102 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the funding, if any, he has secured or requested from the Department of Finance to compensate farmers in County Mayo for crop and fodder losses; and when he will deal with and pay compensation to Mayo farmers in this regard. [14743/98]

I have provided an amount of £1.2 million for the payment of assistance for crop losses under the scheme of assistance for weather related crop losses — 1997 — of which £997,000 has been allocated to date to 237 applicants. In view of the severe hardship experienced by some farmers, particularly those in County Mayo, who applied for fodder crop losses, I have requested my Department officials to re-examine all those cases where significant hardship is demonstrated and where the applicants meet the general criteria of the scheme. When that review is completed which I expect should be shortly, I shall then be in a position to consider levels of assistance for persons who have suffered severe fodder crop losses.
