Vol. 493 No. 5

Written Answers. - Summer Jobs Scheme.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

179 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs when a person (details supplied) in County Mayo will be approved for the student summer jobs scheme; when the job certificate will issue; and, if the application is being refused, the reason in this regard. [16669/98]

In order to qualify for participation in the students summer jobs scheme, students must satisfy a means test which is broadly similar to that currently applying to applicants for unemployment assistance.

The person concerned does not qualify as her weekly means exceed the qualifying limit.

Ceist:

180 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs when a person (details supplied) in County Mayo will be approved for the student summer jobs scheme; when the job certificate will issue; and, if the application is being refused, the reason in this regard. [16670/98]

The purpose of the students summer jobs scheme is to provide income support during the summer holiday period for the less well-off third level students who are disqualified from receiving unemployment assistance and are unable to obtain summer work. Students who have completed their course of study are not eligible to participate in the scheme as such students are eligible to apply for unemployment assistance. The person concerned has completed a course of study and is, accordingly, eligible to apply for unemployment assistance.

182 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs when a person (details supplied) in County Mayo will be approved for the student summer jobs scheme; when the job certificate will issue; and, if the application is being refused, the reason in this regard. [16672/98]

The purpose of the students summer jobs scheme is to provide income support during the summer holiday period for the less well-off third level students who are disqualified from receiving unemployment assistance and are unable to obtain summer work. In order to qualify for participation on the scheme, students must first establish an underlying entitlement to unemployment assistance. To do so, they must be 18 years or older and satisfy a means test. Accordingly any student who will not reach the age of 18 years by 31 August this year cannot be admitted to the scheme. The person concerned will not have reached 18 years on 31 August next and is accordingly not eligible for the scheme.
