Vol. 495 No. 7

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Paul Connaughton

Ceist:

426 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the efforts made by a person (details supplied) in County Galway to get sufficient funding to allow her to attend a special residential school for blind children in Northern Ireland; if his Department will provide the subvention necessary to allow the Western Health Board to cover the costs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21446/98]

The provision of health services, as appropriate, in any individual case is a matter for the relevant health board. I understand that the Western Health Board has been asked to fund the residential costs to send the child in question to a residential school outside the State.

All additional funding made available to my Department in 1998 for the maintenance and development of services to people with physical and sensory disabilities have been fully allocated to the health boards at this stage.
