Vol. 496 No. 3

Written Answers. - Prisoner Transfers.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

364 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the timescale for the repatriation of a person (details supplied). [22423/98]

I have consented to the application of the person referred to in the question and the necessary documentation detailing the administration of his sentence on transfer here was returned to the United Kingdom authorities for their consideration. The consent of the Home Secretary is now awaited, as required under the convention on the transfer of sentenced persons.

At this stage, I am unable to say when the person referred to will be transferred. However, as the Deputy will be aware, it is established Government policy that, whenever possible, prisoners should be permitted to serve their sentences close to their families. In this regard, I can assure him that every effort is being made to effect this transfer as soon as possible.
