Vol. 498 No. 6

Written Answers - Braille Service.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

163 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on the need to develop a Braille unit attached to one of the third level colleges which could provide a quality service to schools and others; if his recent announcement in relation to libraries will provide support at premium rates to schools requiring Braille books; the plans, if any, he has to meet Féach to develop initiatives in this area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28187/98]

A review of current Braille service provision and future requirements in this area is currently under way in my Department. As part of this process, officials of my Department have already had discussions with a number of third level colleges, representatives of Féach and other interested parties. I understand further meetings are planned for early in 1999.

My recent announcement regarding funding for school libraries involves an allocation of £1,000 to each primary school, including special schools. Guidelines regarding expenditure of this funding are currently being drawn up by my Department's inspectorate and will include provision for Brailled books.

The question of any additional funding needs relating to Brailled books will be addressed in the context of the current review of this area.
