Vol. 499 No. 3

Written Answers - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

270 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has approved the application made by Mayo County Council for a water scheme from Palmerstown Bridge, Killala, County Mayo to Banagher, Kilcummin Pier and Lacken Pier; and, if so, the total projected cost in this regard. [2761/99]

This scheme was included as part of the preliminary report for the Ballina regional water supply scheme submitted to my Department in the 1970s but was not approved for further advancement at that time. The preliminary report costings are now out of date and as the scheme is not included in the 1999 Water and Sewerage Services Investment Programme it comes within the terms of my Department's Circular letter L9/98 of 22 October 1998. This circular asked each local authority to undertake a fresh assessment of the needs for capital works in its area and to prepare a prioritised list of projects based on the assessment. The priority lists will be taken into consideration by my Department in framing future water and sewerage services investment programmes under the next National Development Plan 2000-2006.
