Vol. 501 No. 2

Written Answers. - Vehicle Registration Tax.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

260 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance if he will give a breakdown of VRT generated in January 1999; if he will give a breakdown of the make of cars registered; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5517/99]

It should be noted that net new registrations for the month of January, 1999 reached a new all time record high of 26,665 units, an increase of 4,710 or 21.45 per cent on the same month last year.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the gross amount of vehicle registration tax generated during the month of January, 1999 was £96.67 million. A breakdown of this figure is set out below.

These figures do not include repayments of tax which arise when vehicles are de-registered or under the various repayment schemes.
I am informed that a breakdown of vehicles registered by make is not readily available from Revenue. However, I understand that the Society of the Irish Motor Industry carries out an analysis of new cars registered from data supplied by the Revenue Commissioners and publishes this information on a monthly basis.
In the case of cars registered for VRT, Revenue figures show that in January, 1999, 61.4 per cent of cars were under 1400cc, where no change in VRT was made in the recent budget, compared to 53.6 per cent of registrations accounted for by cars of this size in January 1998.
