Vol. 501 No. 4

Written Answers. - Pension Provisions.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

73 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Defence the proposals, if any, his Department has to change the situation whereby, when the widow of an old IRA pensioner who is paid on a monthly basis dies within a few days of the end of the month, his Department seeks recoupment for those remaining days of the month; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6346/99]

Pensions in respect of each calendar month are issued by my Department for encashment on the 20th day of each month. As entitlement to pension ceases on the death of the pensioner, overpayments of pension may occur in some cases following the pensioner's death.

My Department is obliged to seek to recover such overpayments but, apart from an initial request for repayment, does not pursue the issue of recovery in cases involving relatively small amounts.
