Vol. 502 No. 6

Written Answers. - Urban Renewal Schemes.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

243 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the eligibility of towns under the proposed urban renewal scheme of the townscape restoration scheme to be introduced in 1999; the definition of a town of less than 6,000 population; and if any town which has previously benefited under the urban renewal scheme, such as Enniscorthy, County Wexford, will be eligible under this new scheme. [8985/99]

The Government has decided to introduce a new scheme of tax incentives aimed at the restoration and conservation of townscapes in smaller towns. The scheme will be restricted to towns with a population of between 500 and 6,000 as indicated by the most up to date census of population, which gives the population of Enniscorthy (including environs) as 7,640.

Local authorities will shortly be asked to consider which towns could benefit from the new scheme and to submit urban townscape plans to my Department, prepared in accordance with guidelines for the preparation of these plans which are currently being drawn up.
