Vol. 503 No. 3

Written Answers. - Orthodontic Services.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

337 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason there is no provision for emergency orthodontic treatment for children in County Mayo (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9659/99]

The provision of orthodontic treatment to eligible persons in County Mayo is the statutory responsibility of the Western Health Board.

Because of the high cost of fixed appliance orthodontic therapy, health boards scan only provide this treatment where a child has a handicapping orthodontic condition. Children are assessed therefore, in accordance with guidelines drawn up by my Department to ensure that resources are used to best advantage and for those most affected or handicapped.

Orthodontic treatment is carried out for elective reasons and is not carried out where the patients have tooth decay or gum disease.

The two and a half year waiting list period relates to patients who have good dental health and who are awaiting elective orthodontic treatment. It does not relate to patients having gum swellings and severe pain. Patients who have gum swellings and severe pain are normally seen by the local health board dental clinic immediately.
