Vol. 503 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Grants.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

554 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science when his Department will sanction and pay grant assistance towards Cushlough national school, Cushlough, Westport, County Mayo to cover its heating costs in the local community centre in view of the fact the community council will have no alternative but to terminate the agreement to allow the school use the centre unless its debts are covered. [9696/99]

The position generally is that, subject to certain requirements, my Department provides grant aid to national schools in respect of the basic cost of rented accommodation. However, the grant aid is not intended to cover any heating, lighting or cleaning costs, provision for which is included in the school capitation grant.

Cushlough national school is renting temporary accommodation in the local community centre pending provision of an extension to the school building. Architectural planning of the extension is at an advanced stage.

In this case, the original claim for rental for the period from September to December 1998 included heating and electricity charges. My Department is seeking to establish the basic rental cost and the appropriate refund will issue as soon as this has been done.
