Vol. 503 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Recognition.

Jan O'Sullivan

Ceist:

571 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that privately run schools originally set up to cater for leaving certificate students repeating subjects in order to gain places in third level colleges are planning to establish full second level colleges; the way in which these schools might effect other second level schools in their locality; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9827/99]

My Department has no record of the receipt of an application for recognition as a full second level school from the type of school described by the Deputy. Should an application be received, the question of the impact of such a facility on the enrolments in existing schools would form part of my Department's consideration of the matter.

I should add that it is open to any privately-owned and funded school to expand its services without the approval of my Department.
