Vol. 513 No. 2

Written Answers. - Departmental Properties.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

79 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Finance if he will report on progress following the acquisition of the Farmleigh estate; if his Department has carried out a structural analysis of the dwelling; the proposals, if any, the State has for its future use; the work programme for 2000; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2030/00]

Preliminary plans have been prepared for the main house and ancillary buildings, for use as a premier State facility for visiting foreign dignitaries and Government meeting conference centre. A structural survey of Farmleigh House is currently in hand and preliminary findings are expected shortly.

The works proposed for 2000 will include upgrading to meet current fire safety including means of escape and security standards, all necessary fit out, alteration and refurbishment, together with the provision of vehicle parking facilities, access driveways, repairs to the roof, conservatory etc. to enable the complex to be used for the stated purposes. These envisaged works are subject to the findings of the structural survey and to consideration of the observations, if any, which may be made to the Commissioners of Public Works as part of the planning process, public notice in respect of which was published 17 December 1999.

Temporary planning permission has been sought to hold, for a certain number of days during the period 1 April to 30 September each year, events of a sporting, educational, musical or cultural nature and to provide for recreational activities on any day, between 30 May and 31 August each year, as part of the provision of public access to Farmleigh estate. The application was lodged on 17 December 1999.
