Vol. 516 No. 5

Written Answers. - Coastal Protection.

David Stanton

Ceist:

217 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has received contracts or other documents relating to the landslide issue in Cobh; when he will give approval for urgent works to be carried out at Fort Villas, Cobh; if he will make funding available in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8489/00]

Under a programme funded by my Department, financial assistance is available towards remedial works undertaken by Cobh UDC to strengthen areas susceptible to landslides. The assistance takes the form of 100% grants, subject to prior approval of the remedial works by the Department. Since 1980, grants of almost £1.5 million have been paid to the UDC.

Cobh Urban District Council has identified a number of projects as requiring remedial works, including Fort Villas.

Approval to prepare contract documents in respect of remedial works at Fort Villas issued to the urban district council in June 1999. Contract documents were received in my Department in February 2000 and are currently being examined.
