154 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of new cars sold in Dublin in each of the years since 1990. [23744/00]
While there is no information available in my Department regarding car sales, details of the number of cars registered and licensed for the first time provide a useful indication of such sales.
Responsibility for registration of vehicles was transferred from local motor tax offices to the Office of the Revenue Commissioners in 1993. The following information in relation to Dublin, city and county, is available in my Department in respect of the years in question: 1990-1992: number of cars registered; 1993-1999: number of cars licensed for the first time.
Relevant details are set out in the following tabular statement. In the first six months to June 2000, a total of 51,318 new private cars were licensed for the first time in Dublin.
