Vol. 525 No. 4

Written Answers. - Shellfish Production.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

69 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the safety regulations in existence with regard to toxin problems in shellfish production; if all EU countries are implementing EU Directive EC 91/492 in full; the regulation standards that exist in France and the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25352/00]

The health conditions for the production and placing on the market of live bivalve molluscs, including requirements relating to biotoxicity, are prescribed by EU Directive 91/492, as amended. The standards and requirements specified by the directive are of general application throughout the EU and must be applied by each member state. The provisions of the directive were transposed into Irish law by the European Communities (Live Bivalve Molluscs) (Health Conditions for Production and Placing on the Market) Regulations, 1996 (SI No. 147 of 1996).
