Vol. 526 No. 1

Written Answers. - Driving Tests.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

210 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the consideration given to mandatory professional mock driving and rules of the road lessons prior to the issue of an applicant's first provisional driving licence; the benefits of this; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25942/00]

A driver theory test will be introduced in mid-2001 as an additional requirement for novice drivers and will cover in greater depth than the existing practical driving test such areas as knowledge of the rules of the road, risk perception, hazard awareness and good driving behaviour. The existing practical driving test is required both by national and EU law and will remain in place in addition to the theory test.
