Vol. 528 No. 3

Written Answers. - Overhead Pylons.

Ceist:

144 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Health and Children his views on a recent report from scientists at Bristol University that indicated a link between cancer and overhead pylons; his views on the possible link to cancer and overhead pylons; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30382/00]

While a considerable volume of research has been carried out over the years in this area it has not substantiated a definite link between electromagnetic fields and cancer. I am advised that the research referred to by the Deputy is not conclusive on this matter and recommends that further research be undertaken.

A major research project, the international electromagnetic fields project, is being co-ordinated by the World Health Organisation. The EMF project was established by the WHO in 1996 and is due to complete its work in 2001. The WHO, in collaboration with international agencies and organisations, is pooling resources and knowledge concerning effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields and is trying to identify gaps in knowledge in this area. This includes recommending better focused research programmes that allow better health risk assessments to be made and updating critical reviews of scientific literature. The WHO is working towards an international consensus and resolution on the health concerns in this area. The studies referred to by the Deputy will be incorporated into the existing body of scientific literature and assessed by the broad scientific community.
Medical officers in my Department keep informed of any significant developments in this area in regard to human health concerns. Should evidence emerge of any significant risk to public health, I would seek to have remedial measures put in place by the appropriate Departments and agencies.
