Vol. 528 No. 3

Written Answers. - Pension Provisions.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

233 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will revise the terms of the Garda pension scheme, which would permit former gardaí who later marry to buy back into the entitlement for cover for spouses and children, which has been denied under current rules in the case of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 5. [30306/00]

Gardaí were given the option in 1984 to join a revised spouses and children's pension scheme, which provided for superannuation entitlements for the spouse of a member irrespective of the date of marriage.

I understand that the Minister for Finance has recently received the final report of the Commission on Public Service Pensions, and is currently making arrangements for its publication. The Government intends to make formal decisions on the Commission's recommendations once it has had an opportunity to consider the report in detail, and it will assess the possible implications for public service groups and for pensioners in that context.
