Vol. 530 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

406 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science the rates of payment for school and bank holidays for a temporary assistant teacher employed in a mainstream school to look after the needs of a Down's syndrome child; the payment available for days when attendance is not required due to illness of the child or other absence of the child; the holiday entitlements of the teacher and prospects for future career development; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4495/01]

Qualified temporary teachers in primary schools are paid on the common basic pay scale for teachers. The salary point payable depends on the relevant teaching service of each individual teacher. Temporary teachers who serve for a full school year have full entitlement to payment for school holidays.

Part-time teachers are paid at the rate of £19.09 per hour. Each teacher is paid for the number of hours for which she or he is contracted to teach, without reference to occasional non-attendance by individual pupils. Part-time teachers receive 8% of payment for total hours contracted in respect of holiday pay.

Under present legislation, a part-time worker must have worked at least a total of 40 hours in the five weeks immediately before a public holiday in order to be entitled to payment for the public holiday.

Persons filling temporary teaching posts in primary schools are required to be fully qualified primary teachers and as such are eligible to avail of the range of full-time career opportunities which arise in the primary system. Also, depending on the particular circumstances involved, teacher posts which were initially allocated on a temporary basis may be made permanent and temporary teachers would be eligible to apply for such posts.

Liam Aylward

Ceist:

407 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will approve the application for a resource teacher by the board of management of a school (details supplied) in County Kilkenny; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4496/01]

My Department has already sanctioned 2.5 hours per week resource teacher support for a pupil attending the school in question.

My Department's inspectorate has also investigated the need for additional resource teacher support for the school and is currently awaiting further information from the school authorities before a final decision can be made. Once this information is received, my Department will be in touch with the school authorities in relation to this matter.
