Vol. 531 No. 3

Written Answers. - Community Centre Funding.

John Perry

Ceist:

404 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he has received an application for the refurbishment of a community centre (details supplied) in County Leitrim which is located in a disadvantaged area; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the long established committee wishes to improve the opportunities and amenities for the residents in the area as the centre will not only offer activities to members of the local community but also integrate all ages and abilities; when a decision will be made on the allocation of funding; the amount of moneys that will be allocated; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5825/01]

Under the Sports Capital Programme administered by my Department, applications for funding were invited by way of public advertisement on 15 and 17 December 2000 and the closing date for receipt of applications under the 2001 programme was 9 February 2001.

I can confirm that I have received an application under the 2001 programme from the organisation in question, one of over 1,450 received in total. The process of assessing the applications is about to begin in accordance with the guidelines, terms and conditions of the programme.

I intend to make allocations under this programme as soon as all applications have been assessed and until then it will not be possible to state the level of grants to be allocated. An amount of £20 million is provided for in the Estimates for expenditure in 2001.

Question No. 405 answered with Question No. 394.
