Vol. 539 No. 3

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31 dealing with two separate topics. I propose to deal with these topics separately. I propose to call the Deputies in the order in which they submitted notices to my office. With regard to the first topic I received notices from Deputies Naughten and Gormley. I call on Deputy Naughten to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss the following matter of urgent national importance: in the light of this morning's revelation that children were administered with animal vaccine under a State-sponsored vaccination programme, the urgent need for the Minister for Health and Children to make a full statement to the House outlining the situation, and to immediately establish a public inquiry into the Trivax vaccine scandal.

I wish to have the business of the House suspended under Standing Order 31 to discuss the following matter of urgent public importance: the shocking revelation that in the 1970s, a veterinary vaccine normally administered to cows, Tribovax T, was given to Irish babies instead of the three-in-one child vaccine Trivax, as part of drug trials for the Wellcome pharmaceutical company; and the urgent need to have a public inquiry into this appalling incident and its implications for public health.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 31 and, therefore, cannot grant leave to move the motion.

With regard to the second topic, I received notice from Deputies Ring and Gay Mitchell. I call on Deputy Ring to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss the following matter of urgent public importance: the dreadful circumstances whereby patients with cancer cannot obtain the urgent hospital treatment required.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss the following matter of urgent public importance: the appalling situation whereby patients with cancer treatment cannot obtain the hospital treatment required.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 31 and, therefore, cannot grant leave to move the motion.
