Ceist:

216 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if, in relation to grants to various groups involved in animal welfare or to direct expenditure by his Department he will outline the grants paid to animal welfare groups in 2000 and will list groups working in the Dublin area; if, being aware of the problem of wild cats in many suburban areas of Dublin, he will indicate specifically the groups working in this area which he has funded; if he has received a grant application from or assisted a society (details supplied); if he will consider such groups due to the growth of this problem, particularly in the older residential parts of the city; and if he will suggest other possible sources of assistance that such groups could seek. These grants cover organisations active in 21 counties and those with Dublin addresses are denoted by an asterisk. A number of organisations concerned are active on a national level.
As indicated, a grant of £7,500 was paid to The Cat Protection Society of Ireland in respect of 2000. I will consider future requests for aid from cat protection societies in the light of any resources that may become available and having regard to any competing claims for grant assistance which may be submitted by other welfare bodies many of whom deal with various categories of animals, including cats.
