Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

1266 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science when funding will be made available in order that work can commence on the extension for a school (details supplied) in County Mayo. [2094/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is 153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving the accommodation situation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Due to the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.
The school referred to by the Deputy is being refurbished as part of the Government's programme and architectural planning has been completed. It will continue to the invitation of tenders, as soon as it is possible to do so, under the expanded building programme.

Ceist:

1267 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science if a design team has been appointed for works on a school (details supplied) in County Mayo; the position on this matter; and when work will commence on this school. [2095/02]

Ceist:

1277 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science when an application for works on a school (details supplied) in County Mayo was originally received by his Department; the stage this application is now at; the number of the project on the Department's list of works; when work will commence on the school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2234/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 1267 and 1277 together.

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is 153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving the accommodation situation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Because of the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

A proposed building project at the school referred to by the Deputy will proceed to architectural planning and to the preparation of tender documents, as soon as it is possible to do so, under the expanded building programme.
