Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Fishing Industry Development.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

817 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the grant assistance which is available to allow fishermen to develop their businesses. [16291/02]

I am pleased to inform the house that support was announced in May 2002 for 38 new vessels under the fishing fleet development measure of the NDP which is administered under delegated authority by an Bord Iascaigh Mhara. The new vessel initiative involved a total investment of €56 million, including €15.7 million in grant aid. This is the largest single investment in the fishing sector since the foundation of the State.

Other measures available to support fishermen include support for the modernisation of existing vessels and for the purchase and installation of vital safety equipment. Some 22 projects for modernisation of vessels and 58 safety grants have been approved since the beginning of 2000. In addition, special assistance is available for young fishermen and women acquiring their first vessel.
The Commission's proposals for the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy provide for the cessation of grant-aid for fleet renewal and modernisation. I am seeking changes to these proposals that will allow for continued support for fleet renewal and modernisation.
