Vol. 563 No. 2

Written Answers - Driving Licences.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

228 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Transport if he will review the regulations covering the carrying of a driving licence in view of the difficulty it causes to some employees such as construction workers, farmers and others who are changing vehicles on a regular basis during any one day; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7514/03]

The requirement to have a driving licence with you while driving or accompanying a learner driver is essential in the context of the operation of the penalty points system as it will enable the gardaí to identify the driver at the scene of an alleged offence. This requirement is contained in section 40 of the Road Traffic Act 1961 as amended by the Road Traffic Acts 1994 and 2002 and I do not propose to amend this provision.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

229 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Transport if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a person (details supplied) in Dublin 5 who has applied for a test and received an acknowledgement, but who has not yet been assigned a test date, is being refused a third provisional licence which means they must cease driving practice; and if he will take steps to resolve this problem. [7563/03]

An appointment for a driving test issued to the person concerned on 28 February 2003. This will allow the person to apply for the renewal of a provisional driving licence.
