Vol. 566 No. 3

Written Answers. - Prisoner Releases.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Ceist:

186 Ms B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if a decision has been made in regard to the report from the Interim Parole Board on a person (details supplied) serving life imprisonment for murder; the decision made; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12807/03]

The person referred to by the Deputy is serving a life sentence for murder since January 1983. His case was considered by the Interim Parole Board in July 2002.

I decided that it would be inappropriate for me to deal with this case because I had previous dealings in the matter. The Government made an order delegating powers to Deputy Willie O'Dea, Minister of State at my Department, to allow him to decide on the board's recommendations in this case.

My Minister of State agreed with board's recommendation that the person should be offered a transfer to the open centre at Shelton Abbey, Arklow, County Wicklow. The transfer took place on 7 May. No decision has been made concerning their release.
