Vol. 572 No. 6

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

239 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the number of children with autism who require secondary education in the north Kildare-west Dublin area, in 2004 and 2005, and who are at present receiving primary education in special units attached to primary schools; the plans he has to provide special units in secondary educational facilities in the area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24237/03]

I am aware of the emerging need for the development of appropriate second level education services for children with autism in the north Kildare-west Dublin area who will be due to progress from the primary system over the next few years. My Department is currently reviewing a range of possibilities for the development of appropriate models of support at second level for the children in question. I am confident that the necessary support services will be in place when required.
