Vol. 573 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Paul Nicholas Gogarty

Ceist:

299 Mr. Gogarty asked the Minister for Education and Science when a special needs assistant will be employed for a person (details supplied) at Belgrove national school, Clontarf; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24838/03]

All applications for special educational needs supports received between 14 February 2003 and 31 August 2003 will be examined on the basis of the supporting professional report or reports and in the context of resources already available at the school. The process involves an examination of each application and supporting documentation by a dedicated team of inspectors and psychologists. The schools concerned will be informed of the outcome as early as possible in the current school year. An application for special educational needs resources for the pupil in question will be considered in this context. Meanwhile, on 22 October 2003, as an interim measure, my Department approved a special needs assistant to support the pupil. This resource will be subject to review by the dedicated team of inspectors and psychologists.
