321 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Health and Children if Government representatives participated in the Venice Conference on Safety and Quality in Organ Donations and Transplantation's in the European Union, held on 17 and 18 September; if so, the views they presented; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The main objectives of the conference were to review regulations and-or guidelines currently in place in member states and candidate countries in order to build up a consensus on the most effective and practicable approaches at a European level to ensure safety and quality in organ donation and transplantation. I was asked to appoint a technical expert to take part in the conference and my Department nominated one of the country's transplant surgeons to attend. Unfortunately, the person concerned was forced to withdraw from the conference at short notice.
