Vol. 577 No. 4

Written Answers. - Asylum Applications.

Aengus Ó Snodaigh

Ceist:

266 Aengus Ó Snodaigh asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform further to Parliamentary Question No. 154 of 16 October 2003, in which he indicated that the Government will not consider extending the work permit system to asylum applicants while their claims are pending, if he will reconsider this policy, in view of the Central Statistics Office 2002 Census finding that approximately 150,000 of the 190,000 non-Irish nationals aged 15 years and over in April 2002 were in the labour force, and that this represents a labour force participation rate of 79% compared with 58% for the population as a whole. [31599/03]

I refer the Deputy to my reply to his Question No. 154 of 16 October 2003 which outlines the rationale behind the policy of not allowing asylum applicants to take up paid employment pending a decision on their applications. For the reasons set out in that reply I have no plans to change policy at the present time.
