The answer provided to the Deputy in Parliamentary Question 322 on 7 June 2006 contained incorrect information arising from an administrative error in the Citizenship section of my Department. Accordingly, the position is as set out in my response on 11 December, 2007. Any confusion caused is sincerely regretted. An application for a certificate of naturalisation from the person concerned was received in September 2005. On examination of the application it was determined that the person in question did not meet the statutory residency criteria as set out in the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act 1956, as amended. A letter informing him of this was issued on 29 September 2005. It is open to the individual concerned to lodge a new application if and when she is in a position to meet the statutory requirements applicable at that time. I apologise for the inconvenience caused to the Deputy in this case.
